Dad and Heather Reifsnyder stayed here overnight and have gone home for some much needed rest. Katie has not opened her eyes on my watch, but I haven't persisted in seeking her attention as I'm sure rest is still much needed. Katie's hand where an IV was removed is much less swollen than last night and her face swelling appears almsot back to normal. She sustained burns on her arms from the asphalt where she fell and these have been categorized as Stage 2 with no apparent effect on muscle and deeper tissue. She continues to run a temperature of approximately 99.4. We have repeatedly advised that Katie has always run a baseline of 96-97. They don't have orders to administer Tylenol until she reaches 100. This time I asked the nurses to confirm that the doctor has verbally received this information. It has been charted, but I'm not confident it's been reviewed. It's possible that she still doesn't require Tylenol, but I would still like confirmation that this aspect of medical history has been received and reviewed.
We remain very happy with the medical attention Katie has received from the second she collapsed till now. Our disappointment and at times frustration with the communication process has also persisted. Our nurses have been great, and judging by results, so have our doctors. We are working to get a family consultation with the attending physician sometime this afternoon as we have yet to meet one. Residents on the case have spoken with us 2-3 times and appear to be both very capable and in constant contact with the attending. A close family friend who is a physician is coming into town today and has agreed to sit in with us for the family session. As our younger brother Luke said of this friend, "He's an information hound." We are glad for that.
Luke has arrived back from his cruise. He has been stuck at sea and mostly out of range since this began. I spoke with him briefly the night she collapsed and have been able to exchange e-mails about ever 24-36 hours. He's flying in tomorrow and will be here for a few days at least. That's a relief to us all.
I will be sure to post additional information as it comes in.
