Just got back from a few hours away. Katie awoke on request and looked around for a few minutes while we talked to her. She looked toward the person that was talking to her. Earlier and again just now she twitched her toe on request. Dilation looks better.
When we spoke with the doctor earlier today, he suggested that she needs to make major progress over the next six days. We left the meeting and found her willing to awake when asked. We are so thrilled with this development. It's possible that with her weaker heart it just took a bit longer to put things back together because all neurological repairs require bloodflow - diminished blood flow could retard the pace. At least I hope I'm paraphrasing that accurately.
Katie's mortality rate (likelihood of living) is no better than 50%. Her morbidity (severity of functional impairments) still has a poor outlook. There is about a 2-20% of full recovery at this point. This number would be higher if not for the higher risk factor due to her heart issues. Regardless of what follows, we are so relieved to see Katie responsive. We were able to tell her how much we love her and how many other people not in the room also love her and care for her.
This is also a relief because Katie is clearly somewhere inside still. Such an improvement over this morning when we were bracing for the worst. I want to stress that we are not even close to out of the woods on anything yet. But we are in a much better position than this time yesterday!
